When most people think America they think of baseball, beer and apple pie. When I think America I think of two things - guns and BOWIE KNIVES.
A Lil' History
The Bowie knife was popularized by the slave trader, pioneer and soldier Jim Bowie..Once, he was in a sandbar fight where he was stabbed and shot multiple times, had a pistol broken over his head and with the help of the large knife he carried, he still managed to come out semi-victorious. Later on, Bowie, moved to Texas where he married into money. He died at the OK corral – RIP... but I digress. The blade that helped him to survive in that sandbar fight was reportedly the size and shape of a large butcher knife. This fight and the knife became a legend and people began going to their local bladesmith saying, “I want a blade like Jim Bowie”. The bladesmiths quickly capitalized on this and the Bowie knife was born.
Evolution
The bowie in my opinion is one of the most influential and functional designs ever created. You can find an example of the knife in every corner of the world in some form or capacity. In the beginning the knife was rather large and clunky. Over the years, the knife has become more refined. It has a more tapered blade and clip point. The generally accepted blade length for a true bowie is 8 -15 inches.
Uses
I've spent a lot of time with a bowie in my hand. A properly made bowie is one of those jack of all trades, master of all type blades - and I don’t say that about a lot of knives. If I could only have one knife, a bowie would be pretty high on that list of knives. Its great for just about any utilitarian task such as cleaning brush, hunting, food preparation or just about anything you can throw at it.
The Bowie as a Weapon
I'd like to start this final section by saying:
STR8 2 THA POINT CUTLERY DOES NOT ADVOCATE VIOLENCE OF ANYONE. THE UNWARRANTED ATTACK OF ANYONE WITH A BLADE IS WRONG AND A FELONY
Now that we got that out the way if you don’t mind the size I truly believe a bowie is a really good addition to your carry arsenal. It is its the functional equivalent of a mini sword. When crafted correctly the tip geometry is great for puncturing. I will say, just like with any other weapon, if you’re going to own it you should go find good instructors and learn how to use it or at the very least do your research online if money is tight.
Well guys, there's a lot I couldn't explain through this blog. I'm planning on doing a video break down of the knife and my process of making it. So, go follow STR8 STUDIOS!!!!! on Youtube and watch out for that video. Also, hit up my instagram @str82thapoint_cutlery where you might get to see a mini bowie collaboration between me and @yeah_imadeit_woodcraft very soon.
Thanks for stopping by guys I hope y’all have a nice one
